“Oscar” of science for Carinthian researcher

Date:

Great success for Carinthian researcher Sonja Wogrin, who since 2021 has headed the Institute for Electricity Economics and Energy Innovation and the Energetic Research Center at the Technical University in Graz.

Your projects are supported by a funding award from the European Research Council. The mother of two children is happy: “This is the ‘Oscar’ of science!” The work of the 38-year-old, who grew up in St. Philippe near Brückl, is difficult to explain to laypeople, but in times of energy crisis and… of climate change: It collects a wealth of data about electrical systems and uses it to develop computer models to use electricity better and more efficiently in the future.

Live energy consciously
“Electricity is a very complex system. Power plants, high-voltage lines and infrastructure are connected. It’s about a balance between supply and demand. Decisions must be made within moments.” The mother of two girls (5, 7) lives sustainably and energy-consciously: “I cycle to work and persuaded my father in Görtschitztal to install a photovoltaic system. Everyone can do something to save energy.” The successful university professor always enjoys traveling to Carinthia: “I love mountains, the Karawanken – the high chair is my favorite – and of course Lake Wörthersee.”
