“I have a mistake” – Young IT expert does not get a chance on the labor market

Date:

Many companies are desperate for computer scientists, but almost no one invites a young, highly motivated Styrian for an interview. Because of a disability?

Philipp is a very funny, easy conversationalist, uncompromisingly honest, self-critical and very intelligent. The young man from Eastern Styria graduated from a technical school for information technology and always received high praise during his internships.

Yet he has been looking for a job for over a year. Wring by hand. He has already sent out dozens of applications and almost never received a response. From his point of view, the only interview was positive, but there too: no answer.

Defects are not hidden
How can this be the case for a computer scientist? Philipp assumes that the reason is, as he calls it, wrong. You don’t notice it right away, but you don’t hide it in any application. He suffers from a form of autism: Asperger’s.

Can’t he do his job with that? Not being a top computer scientist? “No!” he says. “I’m just a little different from the norm. I like to perform my tasks well, but at my own pace. I need structure, habit, not too many people around me.”

“Finally I want to work”
He slowly becomes desperate. Although he is pursuing further education, he wants to “finally work!” I want to compete, make money and live like an adult in my twenties.”

His parents fully support him – but his father sees political failures and is now annoyed with ‘the system. My son is completely failing. Yes, there are people like him! In fact, the AMS should be fully committed to such a person. Companies must be clear that these are inclusion officers, for whom there is also funding.” And Philipp is not the only one. ‘Of his twelve classmates, only four have a job.’

Efforts have already been made in so many places, “we are running out of contact points. It is not that easy to make an appointment with politicians.”

“Not even a chance”
What makes him horrible: “Especially when it comes to IT and IT, people are even considering hiring from India because there are thousands of skilled workers missing. And then someone from Austria who is highly motivated does not even get the chance to prove himself.”

Maybe a company in Eastern Styria is interested? We are happy to forward contacts to: christa.bluemel@kronenzeitung.at
