Interview with Igor Arroyo, general coordinator of LAB in Euskadi Irratia, on October 2, 2023

Date:

The general coordinator of LAB believes that some sectors of the PNV may be tempted to agree with the PSE-EE on an education law that maintains the language model system.

Tomorrow, October 3, ends the deadline for tabling amendments to the Basque Country’s education law in the Basque Parliament, and both political parties and social actors are taking positions. The LAB union views with concern the “pressure” that it believes the PSE-EE is exerting to “halt” the process of Basqueization and preserve the language models in future Basque educational law.

In an interview for Euskadi Irratia’s “Faktoria” programme, LAB general coordinator Igor Arroyo warned that some sectors of the PNV may be tempted to agree with the PSE-EE on an education law that would maintains the education system. language models.. In recent days, the General Secretary of the PSE-EE, Eneko Andueza, has stated that the new legal text must explicitly include linguistic models. For his part, EH Bildu has advocated respecting the spirit and letter of the education pact in the Basque parliament.

After two workers died in a warehouse in Lanciego yesterday, 41 people have now died in industrial accidents in the Basque Country this year, according to LAB’s count. Arroyo believes that “profound changes” need to be made in prevention policies and has compared traffic accidents to work accidents. As he explained, although the number of deaths is similar in both cases, there is a significant “imbalance” in the inspection; While 300,000 traffic fines have been imposed, only 700 have been imposed in the workplace for failure to comply with prevention measures.

In a different vein, he also mentioned the two days of strikes in the public sector on October 25 and December 19. According to Arroyo, it is time to say ‘enough is enough’ because the situation of both workers and users is ‘bad’. In this sense, he has called for changing policies to improve working conditions and strengthen and develop public services.

Finally, regarding possible tax reform, Arroyo believes that opening the debate is good news, as long as it is done “without vetoes.” In fact, he believes that we should talk about all taxes, not just personal income tax, but also capital and corporate taxes.
