Animal euthanized – Canada: Bear kills couple with dog in national park

Date:

A bear has attacked and fatally injured a couple and their dog in one of the country’s oldest national parks, in the western province of Alberta. The bodies were discovered Saturday morning. A nearby grizzly was extremely aggressive and was euthanized to protect the public.

The park authority had already received a tip about a possible bear attack via a GPS device on Friday evening. However, due to the bad weather, a helicopter could not take off.

A team specially trained to deal with wildlife attacks took the overland route to the Red Deer River Valley in Banff National Park. But it was too late.

Victims ‘were the most cautious people’
“They were long-time partners who loved nature and were inseparable,” the channel quoted a family member as saying. “They lived in the wilderness and were two of the most cautious people I know.” The victims knew and followed the usual rules to protect themselves from bear attacks. Parts of the national park were temporarily closed.

“This is a tragic incident”
Fatal bear attacks on humans are extremely rare, an expert told the CBC broadcaster. To protect yourself from attacks, she recommended traveling in groups, making loud noises and carrying bear spray. It was initially unclear how the attack came about on Friday. “This is a tragic incident,” the organization said, expressing its condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
