The 2023 Oktoberfest in Munich was a record: in fantastic weather, sun and clear blue skies, 7.2 million visitors flocked to the Theresienwiese. That’s more than we’ve seen in decades.
The last time the seven million mark was exceeded was in 1985, as Wiesn boss Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU) said in Munich on Tuesday. Festival management, innkeepers, fairground operators, market traders and police were extremely satisfied with the 18-day “XXL Wiesn”, which was extended by two days until the Day of German Unity.
Water requested, less beer sold
The visitors were a bit more reserved when it came to alcohol. Since September 16, approximately 6.5 million liters of beer have been served. In 2019 before the corona pandemic, this was 7.3 million liters.
Many ordered non-alcoholic drinks instead. More than 50 percent more was served here. Particularly popular: water. In some tents the water even ran out for a short time, says economic official Baumgärtner.
Celebrities and guests from all over the world
The second Oktoberfest was peaceful after two corona-related cancellations and once again attracted more guests from abroad, especially from Italy, France and the US. Police, fire brigade and medical service Aicher Ambulance spoke of a calm and peaceful state of affairs.
Many celebrities also celebrated, such as the players of FC Bayern and Harry Kane. Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger conducted an Oktoberfest band. Cathy Hummels invited people to her Oktoberfest walk. Actress Uschi Glas was seen at the “Damenwiesn” organized by car rental company Regine Sixt.
