Last May, a buzzard was found dead in its nest in Lower Austria. Two young animals, which probably died of starvation, also lay dead next to the bird. Now it is clear: unknown people had brutally shot the bird of prey in its nest. There is currently no trace of the suspects.
BirdLife’s new finding confirmed on Sunday that the animal had been brutally shot. The animal protection organization has filed a complaint for animal abuse and violation of the hunting law.

According to Matthias Schmidt, bird of prey expert at BirdLife, the young birds could no longer be recovered and examined. They were already too badly decomposed. After recovery, the carcass of the adult buzzard was taken to the Wildlife Research Institute.
Violation of hunting law
According to the animal protection organization, shooting the bird is a violation of the hunting law and leaving the young animals behind is animal abuse. According to BirdLife, more than 200 wild birds across Austria fell victim to illegal persecution between 2016 and 2022. The most common are shootings and poisonings.
