Stationed in Crimea – Ukraine reports: Russian warship damaged

Date:

The Ukrainian Navy has reported damage to a Russian warship near the Black Sea port of Sevastopol on the occupied Crimean Peninsula. The corvette Pawel Derzhavin was damaged. There was initially no comment from Moscow.

Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk confirmed an “incident” on the ship on Thursday, but did not provide details. The evening before, several Telegram channels – including the military administration of the port city of Odessa – reported that the warship had collided with a Russian naval mine at sea off the coast of Sevastopol. The Crimean Wind channel reported that its subscribers heard an explosion late Wednesday evening.

Can be used for missile attacks
The Pavel Derzhavin is one of four corvettes also classified as heavy patrol boats by the Russian Black Sea Fleet. These warships could also be used to launch cruise missiles, which Russia has regularly fired into Ukraine since the war of aggression began almost 20 months ago. One of these ships, the Sergei Kotov, was attacked by Ukraine in September and was severely damaged, according to Kiev.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military says it shot down 28 Russian drones on Thursday evening. A total of 33 Iranian-made Shahed drones were fired from Russia’s Belgorod region into northern Ukraine and from Crimea into southern Ukraine, the Ukrainian Air Force said. In the port city of Odessa, warehouses and residential buildings were damaged and one person was injured.

Attacks along the Danube
“Enemy drones flew in different directions, so air defenses were deployed in at least six regions of Ukraine,” the air force continued. According to the South Ukrainian Armed Forces, Russia carried out a series of drone attacks on port facilities along the Danube. “In an attempt to evade the air defense system, the drones came from different directions,” they explained on Telegram. Four drones were destroyed in the Mykolaiv region and ten in the Odessa region.

Drone crashed in Romania
A combat drone also crashed over Romania. The Ministry of Defense in Bucharest announced on Thursday that a drone crater was found in an uninhabited area three kilometers west of the village of Plauru, which may have been caused by an explosion. Plauru is located on the Chilia arm of the Danube, which forms the border with Ukraine, directly opposite the Ukrainian port of Izmail – less than 500 meters away. A crashed drone in Romania already caused irritation in September.
