According to the first information, a chase took place between a smuggler and the police on the A9 near Trieben (Styria) in the early hours of Monday. Among other things, a police car was rammed.
The madness started around 6:30 am in the Spering Tunnel in Upper Austria. A vehicle stopped in the breakdown area and some people walked through the tunnel, closing it. “Only then did we realize that these were refugees who had been trafficked,” said police spokesman Markus Lamb.
However, the smugglers fled via the highway towards Styria. The vehicle left the highway near Trieben and fled further on the B 114 towards Möderbrugg. “The driver broke through a police barrier. A vehicle was rammed,” Lamb reports. No one was injured.
Helicopters, drones in use
The driver was then arrested near St. Johann am Tauern. He and another smuggler fled on foot but were arrested. The vehicle also contained several refugees in need of medical care.
In addition to many police officers from Styria and Upper Austria, a helicopter and drones were also present.
