After it was announced on Wednesday morning – the ‘Krone’ reported – that there was a first clue about the homeless murderer in Vienna, the police published a photo and a video of a man near the third crime scene in the afternoon. According to investigators, it is still unclear whether it is a suspect, a witness or an uninvolved person. The person is requested to report to the police.
In any case, the person on the surveillance cameras is a ‘person of special police interest’ due to the spatial and temporal proximity of the third crime. The police announced this on Wednesday. The man is seen on video from cameras in the Hernalser Belt area between 1:19 a.m. and 1:40 a.m. on August 9.
Investigators describe the person they are looking for as follows: male, slim build, approximately 6 feet 6 inches to 6 feet 6 inches tall, according to video analysis reports. The man was also wearing a dark jacket or dark sweater with a hood, a dark baseball cap, dark pants and dark shoes.
Three homeless people fell victim to the attack
As the Viennese police have reported several times in the past, three homeless people were attacked in public spaces by a currently unknown perpetrator. The series of horrors began on July 12: a 56-year-old homeless man was found by a passer-by on a park bench on the stair path near Handelskai with several stab and cut wounds. The man was already dead.
Just ten days later – on July 22 – the second attack took place. A homeless woman (51) was attacked with a knife by an unknown person in Venice Au Park. The woman survived with serious injuries. The final attack finally took place on August 9 on the Hernals Belt.
10,000 euros for useful information
The criminals now assume that it is a serial offender. With the published search video, police may be able to put an end to the series of murders. The Association of Friends of the Vienna Police has offered 10,000 euros for information leading to the identification of the perpetrator.
All information will be treated as strictly confidential and should be sent to the Vienna State Criminal Investigation Department on 01-31310-33800 or by email to tips-obdachlose@polizei.gv.at.
