A wooden box was probably the cause of a house fire in Wies, in western Styria, on Wednesday evening. A cyclist coming home from work and a neighbor rushed to help just in time and got the resident outside.
A 58-year-old woman was on her way home from work shortly after 10 p.m. when she noticed heavy smoke coming from a residential building. A 64-year-old neighbor also rushed over. At that moment the boiler room was already completely on fire. The two alerted the emergency services, but mainly brought out the 60-year-old resident.
Just a few minutes later it could have become dangerous for the woman, says Christian Schwender, commander of the Wies fire brigade: “There was a lot of smoke.”
The Wies and Vordersdorf fire brigades were deployed with 39 men and were able to quickly bring the fire under control. A “fire out” was declared around midnight. The Red Cross took the 60-year-old to Deutschlandsberg Hospital; she may have suffered smoke poisoning.
Fire investigators are on their way
Initial investigation shows that a box of firewood that was placed next to the solid fuel boiler may have caught fire. Fire investigators will conduct final investigations on Wednesday. The extent of the material damage has not yet been determined.
