Saving energy is popular in many Austrian households. Because high electricity prices drive many people into poverty. A significant number are dependent on assistance. These are now also available via electricity donation.
In the wake of the energy crisis, many Austrians installed a photovoltaic system. This will noticeably reduce costs and you may be able to earn a few extra euros. But the purchase is expensive, and financially less affluent families rarely get to enjoy it. If the Austrian Energy Community platform has its way, they should also benefit from the energy transition.
Project presented in Vienna
Initiator Matthias Nadrag has now presented the project to experts in Vienna: “While the top ten percent have long been able to afford independence with photovoltaics, electric cars and storage, we take care of the bottom three percent.”
In concrete terms, it works as follows: Since 2021, it has been possible in Austria to distribute energy without being an “energy trader”. Solar energy that the producer does not need can be shared regionally with neighbors. That has been history since the beginning of October.
Anyone can donate electricity
The Austrian Energy Community represents not only a social but also a technical innovation, as energy communities of citizens in various network areas have only been possible since October 2, 2023. In the first days of October alone, hundreds of kilowatt hours were distributed between Vienna, Burgenland and Carinthia.
For example, the “Regiowert” group of companies uses the surplus from two photovoltaic plants in Burgenland to provide sufficient energy to prepare hot meals every day for about 30 socially disadvantaged people at the opening of the Westbahnhof in Villach. Excess energy from private and commercial power plants becomes direct assistance to needy families and aid organizations. All information here.
