Lack of protection? – Israeli flag torn from the Vienna city temple

Date:

On Saturday evening, unknown people tore an Israeli flag from the Vienna city temple. Police confirmed the incident to the media after a video of it emerged online. It was posted by Bini Guttmann, a Viennese board member of the World Jewish Congress.

“Last night there was an anti-Semitic attack on the Vienna city temple (…). The situation is also serious for Jews in Europe,” he wrote about the video on Saturday evening. It shows two young men pulling down the Israeli flag above the door of the Jewish temple. The City Temple is the most important synagogue in Vienna and is located on Seitenstettengasse in the 1st district.

Here you can watch the video on platform X (formerly Twitter).

Perpetrator investigated?
In the video you also see a woman imitating a machine gun. Police have already confirmed the incident. However, on Saturday evening it was unclear whether the perpetrators had already been identified or were still on the run. Information about this varies. Passers-by reportedly tried to grab the young men, but without success.

The first reactions can already be seen on social media, for example from Viennese deputy mayor Christoph Wiederkehr, who describes the act as “simply disturbing”. “Attacking a Jewish institution and filming yourself must have consequences,” he wrote on the X platform (formerly Twitter) on Saturday evening.
