As always, our armed forces are at their best for the National Day on October 26. An important contribution to this is the exhibition at Heldenplatz. On Monday, two ‘stars’ of the exhibition, the new Leonardo helicopter AW169 (Lion) and the Sikorsky UH-60, better known as the Black Hawk, landed in the heart of Vienna. There was also a “Krone” team on board.
Pleasant temperatures, excellent flying weather and perfect organization: under these conditions the Black Hawk took off from the “Brumowski” air base in Langenlebarn (Lower Austria) on Monday afternoon.
After about 20 minutes of flying along the Danube, past the “Krone” building and the sights of the city of Vienna, the high-tech helicopter landed again on Heldenplatz in front of numerous spectators and reporters.
Ten minutes after the Black Hawk, the newly purchased multifunctional helicopter Leonardo AW169 (Lion) also landed in front of the gates of the Hofburg and the National Library. “A premiere in Vienna,” as Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) emphasized to media representatives.
Tanks, helicopters, Eurofighters and a flight simulator
In addition to the Leonardo and the Black Hawk, almost all armored vehicles from the Leopard to the Ulan and a 1:1 model of the Eurofighter can also be seen at the fair on Thursday. Another highlight is a flight simulator. The Mittelstrasse on Heldenplatz will again be used for demonstrations. For example, the paratroopers from the fighter platoon will land there or the guards will give a demonstration.
Inauguration of approximately 1000 recruits
On the national holiday, the wreath will be laid at 9:30 am by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and the federal government. The thousand recruits, including twenty women, are then sworn in.
Tanner: “Federal army you can touch”
“I am convinced that we have something interesting for everyone in our information and performance show. We provide the armed forces with hands-on information: first-hand information, visits to vehicles, weapons and equipment, as well as demonstrations of the troops and stations in which they can participate,” Tanner explains.
Impressions of the Black Hawk flight from Langenlebarn to Vienna
This time, given the currently elevated terror alert level, special attention will be paid to the security situation, as Tanner emphasized. “We will of course monitor and assess the security situation every hour. If the situation so requires, the associated security measures will be increased and tightened,” concludes Tanner.
