Tornadoes reported – up to 40 injured after storms in Paderborn

Up to 40 people were injured in a severe storm in the Paderborn area on Friday. In Lippstadt, the fire service reported a suspected tornado that caused serious damage. The German Weather Service has temporarily issued the highest severe weather warning level.

“During a thunderstorm on Friday afternoon, a tornado left a path of destruction from west to east through the center of Paderborn towards eastern parts of the city,” police said in the early evening. Up to 40 people were injured, ten of them seriously. According to officials, roofs were torn from halls, sheet metal, insulation and other materials were flown for miles. The damage would amount to several million euros.

Tornado destroyed trees and roofs
In Lippstadt, about 35 kilometers away, the fire service also reported a suspected tornado that caused serious damage. Roofs were destroyed, trees fell. Their falling branches damaged cars and shattered windows. Reports of tornadoes have also been received from Lüdenscheid and Meschede, according to a DWD spokesperson, the check is still pending.

Rammstein concert interrupted
In Leipzig, a concert by the band Rammstein had to be interrupted on Friday evening. After a 15-minute break due to thunderstorms, fans were allowed to return to the show.

The German weather service DWD had temporarily issued the highest severe weather warning level 4 for the region. This includes “extreme thunderstorms” with hailstorms, heavy rain, or extreme hurricanes.
