Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is once again standing up for the Palestinians. She protested for the climate in front of the Swedish parliament in Stockholm on Friday, holding a sign reading ‘Justice for Palestine’.
Several of her fellow activists also held up signs expressing solidarity. Greta Thunberg shared an accompanying photo on social networks. The activist had already expressed her solidarity with the Palestinians last week. Critics then accused her of failing to mention the 1,400 deaths in the major attack on Israel by the Islamist Hamas.
Here you see the photo that the Swedish climate activist posted.
“I am against the terrible attacks of Hamas”
“It goes without saying – or so I thought – that I am against Hamas’ terrible attacks,” Greta Thunberg later added. Nevertheless, the Austrian branch of Fridays For Future (FF) has now distanced itself from reports about the conflict in the Middle East. The group stands “united against anti-Semitism” and therefore “clearly” distances itself from this content. The German group made similar comments (see video above).

On Wednesday, the climate protection movement expressed its solidarity with the Palestinian people, who are exposed to attacks by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip, on the international Instagram account. The Swedish branch said on the X platform (formerly Twitter) on Thursday that it condemned “Israel’s ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.”
Several local groups in Sweden now want to use their weekly climate protest on Friday to highlight calls for an immediate ceasefire, protection of civilians and humanitarian aid.
Fridays for Future Sweden said it would show solidarity with affected citizens on all sides, while distancing itself from any form of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. The group also agreed with UN Secretary General António Guterres, who said Hamas’ attacks “did not take place in a vacuum”.
