At least one dead and dozens injured after a tornado passed through Friday night that caused powerful storms and flooding in West Germany, causing extensive damage to buildings, homes and property.

Authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia have reported that between 30 and 40 people have been injured, at least 10 of them seriously, after the tornado hit the area. In addition, according to German police, a man has died in Rhineland-Palatinate after entering a flooded cellar, where he was electrocuted.

In the German state of Bavaria, in the south-east of the country, at least 14 people have been injured after the roof of a building collapsed, for which a woman and child had to be taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

“During a thunderstorm on Friday afternoon, a tornado followed a path of destruction from west to east through the center of Paderborn towards the eastern parts of the city,” German police said.

The tornado also caused “serious damage” as it crossed Lippstadt, about 35 kilometers away, according to local officials, with numerous roofs and uprooted trees temporarily trapping some 120 swimmers in a pool in the area.

After more damage was found to cars and even the bell tower of a church, in the town of Hellinghausen, a crew of between 200 and 300 firefighters moved to the area to manage the incidents, many of them from towns and neighboring villages. .

Likewise, the fall of branches and trees has paralyzed rail traffic between Paderborn and Altenbeken and has diverted trains in the region due to a tornado that triggered severe weather warnings in several parts of the country this Friday evening.

The German Weather Service (DWD) has even issued a “severe weather” warning for North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Thuringia, Bavaria, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg.
