The Tyrolean border municipality of Gries am Brenner was the scene of numerous fire brigade operations on Tuesday evening due to heavy rainfall. First, a car with two occupants was hit by a mudslide on the Brenner highway. Nearly two hours later, another mudslide thundered against a residential building. Miraculously, no one was injured.
Shortly before 4:30 am, the Mure broke out in the Au district of Gries. A residential building was hit by the mass of mud and debris. “D“The terrace as well as a window and parts of the interior on the first floor were damaged,” the police reported.
A blessing in disguise: no injuries
The local fire chief Alois Wieser had already told the “Krone” that morning that a mudslide had partially entered a building. The fences of adjacent buildings were also damaged. Fortunately, no one was injured. The clean-up work was still underway on Tuesday afternoon.
Car hit by couple from Mure
About two hours earlier, a mudslide had hit the Brenner highway near Gries. The car of a South Tyrolean couple was hit. The fire brigade had to free the two occupants. Fortunately, they were not injured either. The A13 initially had to be completely closed between the border with Italy and the Brennersee, but could then reopen with restrictions.
According to the state geological department, the affected slope remains under observation. “This means that for road safety reasons, the direction Innsbruck remains closed – until further notice, traffic will be driven in one lane towards Brenner in the direction of oncoming traffic,” Asfinag said. It cannot yet be estimated how long this traffic regulation will apply.
