All occupants of the small aircraft died in the accident in St. Andrä im Lungau (Salzburg). Now it is the turn of the researchers and experts.
A loud bang and suddenly the small plane fell from the sky. As loud as the engine noise was immediately, it became so quiet afterwards in St. Andrä im Lungau. This is what eyewitnesses report.
First there was talk of seriously injured people, then of deaths
On Thursday afternoon, a small motor plane disappeared in the immediate vicinity of Gasthof Passegger in the forest on the Mitterberg. Shortly after 3:20 p.m., eyewitnesses alerted emergency services. The Red Cross initially said only two people were seriously injured. Late in the evening, the true extent of the tragedy was confirmed: all four people on board the private plane, which had taken off from Zagreb, died in the crash.
Persistent rain and terrain made the rescue difficult, which took until midnight. Even though the wreckage was only a few meters below a forest road. Another challenge awaited the rescuers: a type of aircraft airbag had not deployed during the crash and could have exploded. Specialists from Graz have finally defused the rescue package.
Details about the occupants, the flight destination and the minutes before the tragic crash are currently unknown. The Salzburg State Police Office and aviation experts are now investigating the wreckage and the exact reasons for the crash.
