She was a loving wife and mother and was considered extremely conscientious, hardworking and modest. And she seemed happy. But then, in 2001, a 37-year-old kindergarten teacher suddenly disappeared from her home in Lower Austria. After a carpenter had measured a staircase there.
Nothing, absolutely nothing, on the morning of September 28, 2001, had indicated an impending tragedy in the lives of this small family from Wiener Neustadt.
Like every weekday, Heidrun and Paul Wastl got up early and the 37-year-old prepared breakfast for her husband and their son. And after they had all eaten in the cozy kitchen, the municipal employee said goodbye to his wife and the boy, gave them kisses – and then quickly drove to work. Because he had a lot of chores to do in the next few hours.
Shortly afterwards, the part-time kindergarten teacher – she was free at the time – took her child to daycare. She chatted with her colleagues and said she would pick up the little one no later than 1 p.m.
