Media reports say at least two people have been killed and 44 others injured in a tornado in northern Michigan. CNN and ABC broadcasters reported, citing authorities, that the storm had swept through Gaylord the day before with winds of up to 225 kilometers per hour.
CNN reported “catastrophic” destruction. Cars were knocked over by the tornado and roofs were ripped off houses.
“He destroyed an insane amount of buildings and risked so many lives,” said Jordan Awrey, a Gaylord city councilor. “The city is destroyed.”
Tornadoes are actually uncommon in the region.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she had declared a state of emergency in Otsego County, where Gaylord is located. “We will do whatever it takes to rebuild.”
