Christmas joy – Fabio hopes for a saving lung transplant

Date:

After aggressive lymphoma and stem cell therapy, ten-year-old Fabio from Steyr is fighting for his life in intensive care. A lung transplant is his last chance. The “Krone” supports Fabio and his family together with our readers as part of the “Christmas Joy” campaign. Help us!

Fabio turns eleven years old on December 3. Unfortunately, it is uncertain whether the student from Steyr will be able to consciously experience his birthday. The seriously ill boy has been in the intensive care unit of St. Anna Hospital in Vienna for months, where he had to be put into a deep sleep on October 30. His body, which has been severely abused since cancer, desperately needs rest.

“We pray to God”
“We pray to God that hopefully his condition will stabilize,” says his father – a 47-year-old laborer – who, like his mother (47), who took leave as a drugstore saleswoman, is now at Fabio’s side around the clock awake. They both barely sleep at night and only nap for a few hours during the day. In addition to the exceptional emotional situation, the financial situation is now also tense due to the stay in Vienna.

The suffering started in August 2021
The suffering of the brave Fabio has been going on since August 2021, after fluid was found in his abdomen, part of the inflamed intestine had to be removed and, to make matters worse, blood poisoning occurred. A laboratory result finally confirmed that Fabio was suffering from an unfortunately under-researched but very aggressive form of lymphatic cancer (“Burkitt’s lymphoma”).

Has already completed six chemotherapy treatments
The ‘bad cells’ had already spread throughout his abdomen and lungs. Despite six painful rounds of chemotherapy, the cancer continued to grow in Fabio’s body and also attacked his diaphragm. Further surgical interventions were inevitable.

Fabio’s blood needs to be washed three to four times a week
In the end, there was only one ray of hope for Fabio: a stem cell transplant. However, only one donor could be found whose blood cells matched only 90 percent with Fabio’s. The result was rejection reactions, which unfortunately could not be fully controlled even with immunosuppressants. Fabio’s blood needs to be washed three to four times a week.

The ten-year-old also received the highest possible dose of cortisone. “His immune system is completely destroyed. Germs and fungi have also taken up residence in Fabio’s lungs and are destroying his bronchi. And he had an allergic reaction to the medication given,” the father said.

The lungs are weak and destroyed
The son’s lungs are now so weak and destroyed that a transplant is probably no longer possible. Provided that the boy’s physical condition can be stabilized to such an extent that he can survive such an operation. The decision will be made soon. “We are doing everything we can to ensure that Fabio remains with us and that his life can be saved. He is also very attached to it!”
