A ship sank, a tank shot down: a Russian reporter increasingly appears to be the angel of misfortune to his own army. But can his coverage simply be equated with a bad omen, is it mere coincidence or is there more to it?
Wherever he appears, the danger is not far away, Alexander Kots finally reports for Russia as ‘special correspondent’ about the events in Ukraine. So far, so unusual. However, more and more cases are being documented online in which the Russian military did not commit until shortly after its contributions the “Komsomolskaya Pravda” suffered heavy losses.
Attacks only shortly after notification
The two most devastating cases are probably the destruction of the “Orsk” in the port of Berdyansk – immediately after the first report of Kots – and now the bombardment of an artillery unit near Sieverodonetsk. Both attacks ended up with the Ukrainian army immediately after the messages that the war correspondent published via video.
Given the huge losses suffered by the Russian army in the war of aggression against Ukraine, this could be pure coincidence – but users on social networks are already joking that Kots is just an unlucky angel. In fact, the incidents probably have a rather banal background.
Locations most likely given away by accident
For example, the journalist repeatedly seems to unintentionally reveal relevant information about the positions of the Russian army. Since the Ukrainians closely follow such reports, Kots apparently provides them with essential information for possible attacks. From the very beginning of the invasion, Ukraine has been extremely careful to avoid such mistakes itself.
The Ukrainian army has repeatedly called on its own people not to share messages about Ukrainian soldiers on social media, so as not to make the Russian invasion even easier. A tactic that apparently has not yet fully penetrated the Russian media houses.
