Xavier Bettel (50) will become the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg. The previous prime minister announced this on Wednesday evening after his Democratic Party (DP) gave the green light for a government alliance with the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV).
“I am very much looking forward to this new challenge,” said Bettel, who has been Prime Minister in the EU’s second smallest country since the end of 2013. Approximately 640,000 people live in Luxembourg (as of 2021). Bettel succeeds Social Democrat Jean Asselborn (74), who was Luxembourg’s Minister of Foreign Affairs for about 19 years. Bettel stated that as Deputy Prime Minister he would also be responsible for foreign trade, development policy and the wider region.
15 instead of 17 ministers
The new government should have fifteen ministers instead of the previous seventeen. According to Bettel, the CSV has eight and the DP seven. The new Prime Minister will be the national party leader of the CSV, Luc Frieden, who was supposed to form the government.
The three-party coalition of Liberals, Greens and Social Democrats led by liberal Bettel, which has been in power since late 2013, was voted out on October 8 due to heavy losses for the Greens. The CSV emerged from the elections as the strongest party, followed by the DP.
The coalition agreement, which sets out the program for the next five years, will be signed on Thursday. Luxembourg is a parliamentary monarchy. The Grand Duke primarily only has representative and state notarial duties.
