“Brussels wants ghettos” – Provocative Orban research on migration and Ukraine

Date:

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is once again on a crash course with the EU. Since Friday, a new “National Consultation in Defense of Our Sovereignty” has been asking for positions on migration issues and neighboring Ukraine – with sometimes provocative language.

“Brussels wants to build ghettos for migrants in Hungary. What Do You Think?” is one of the eleven questions in the “National Consultation”, which the cabinet presented on its Facebook page. It is also about the war in Ukraine, with which Hungary has a tense relationship. The ‘EU line’ is explained, for example: ‘Brussels wants to give Ukraine more weapons and money’ or ‘Brussels wants Ukraine to become a member of the European Union’.

Support for a permanent relationship with Brussels
The last investigation of this nature in 2022 focused on EU sanctions against Russia. The investigation is not legally binding, but Orban said that by reaffirming his position he could “continue” his conflicts with Brussels. At the end of October, he declared at the EU summit in the Belgian capital: “We do not want to spend money on migrants or on Ukraine.”

Orbán, who has been in power since 2010, has been in conflict with the European Commission for years on numerous issues. He rejects the EU’s sanctions policy against Russia over the war in Ukraine and continues to rely on an agreement with Moscow. Although Hungary is a member of the EU and NATO, the country is critical of Ukraine’s possible accession to the EU.

Accession talks and billions in aid for Kiev blocked
Moreover, the country – like Slovakia – is blocking new EU billions in aid to Ukraine. At the EU summit, both states recently expressed sharp criticism of a planned aid package for the country worth 50 billion euros.
