Nearly 22 years after the murder of a five-year-old girl, a 53-year-old girl was killed by lethal injection in a prison in Huntsville, near Houston, Texas. In his final words, David Renteria asked the victim’s family for forgiveness.
The man was sentenced to death by an El Paso County jury in 2003 for the kidnapping and murder of a five-year-old child.
The court found it proven that he had kidnapped the girl in November 2001 while she was shopping with her parents before Christmas.
According to court documents, the child was found strangled the next day. Renteria had therefore tried to burn the body.
The case was reopened several times
He initially claimed that a gang forced him to commit the crime. The case was reopened after several objections from the defense, but the now 53-year-old was also sentenced to death in the new trial in 2008.
