Syrians illegally brought more than 200 refugees across the border to Germany.
The six suspects are between 23 and 32 years old and are all from Syria. According to the Public Prosecution Service, they are part of a gang of smugglers who would have smuggled at least 212 people to and through Austria in 2022.
The trial started in September and the first verdicts were handed down on Tuesday at the Salzburg Regional Court: one defendant was given a prison sentence of 24 months, of which 16 months were suspended. The second suspect was given a one-year conditional sentence, the third Syrian received an unconditional two-year sentence. The rulings are already legally binding. The trial against the three other suspects will continue on December 5.
According to investigators, the smugglers collected 600 euros per refugee for their dubious services. The police were able to seize a total of 2,379 euros in cash and a smuggled car. The gang organized the trips via Vienna and Tyrol by telephone – as shown by the analyzes of numerous chats and call records of the suspect. According to the indictment, they show the image of a criminal network.
