Spain opens the door to unilaterally recognize Palestine and Israel accuses the country of ‘supporting terrorism’

Date:

The President of the Spanish government has concluded the tour that took him to Israel, Palestine and Egypt. The Israeli Foreign Minister has ordered a “reprimand” to be issued to the Spanish ambassador and the Belgian representative.

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchezhas concluded the tour that took him to Israel, Palestine and Egypt, opening the door for Spain to unilaterally recognize the Palestinian State if the international community does not make joint decisions in that direction.

A few hours later, the Israeli Foreign Ministry summoned the ambassadors of Spain and Belgium in retaliation for the “false” statements made in the previous hours by the President of the Spanish Government and the Belgian Prime Minister, Alexander De Croobecause they believe it represents Hamas’s “support for terrorism.”

Sánchez had defended before this tour and to all the interlocutors he met during this tour that the only way to resolve the conflict between Israel and Palestine is coexistence of two states.

Until now, when asked whether Spain was considering unilateral recognition, he had emphasized that this joint work was necessary. But this Friday he went a step further, suggesting that Spain could only act in the absence of multilateral progress. He did this at the border crossing at Rafah, the border between Gaza and Egypt, which he visited at the end of his tour with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.

“The time has come for the international community, and especially European countries, to make a decision on the recognition of the Palestinian state,” he stressed. And at that moment he indicated that it would be worth working together for this, “but if that does not happen – he added – Spain will of course make its own decisions.”

The Israeli Foreign Ministry, for its part, alluded in a statement to the joint appearance of Sánchez and De Croo at the Rafah border crossing: “Israel is acting in accordance with international law and fighting a terrorist organization that is worse than the Islamic State that commits war. crimes and crimes against humanity.”

The minister himself Eli Cohenwas the one who ordered a “reprimand” to be delivered to the Spanish ambassador, Ana María Salomón Pérezand to the Belgian representative, Jean Luc Bodson.

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoganstressed last Wednesday that Spain is the only country in the Western world that has not remained “silent” in the face of what he called “crimes against humanity” by Israel in Gaza.

“Western countries, except one, are unfortunately not addressing this issue. Almost all countries in Europe are silent on this issue. There are no initiatives to end the massacres. Only Spain shows a positive attitude,” Erdogan said this Friday. accused Israel of “killing journalists” who are “trying to tell the world about the tragedy” being experienced in the Gaza Strip.
