Weapon systems destroyed – Kiev: High Russian losses last week

Date:

It is widely reported from Kiev that Russia has suffered very high losses in various combat zones in Ukraine in the past week. Meanwhile, the war-torn country is also plagued by a snowstorm, leaving 40,000 people without even light.

According to an official Ukrainian statement, Russian forces have suffered heavy losses in the various combat areas of Ukraine over the past week. “6,260 occupiers and 672 units of weapons and military technology were destroyed,” the Unian agency quoted Deputy Defense Minister Olexandr Pavlyuk as saying on Sunday. The weapons systems destroyed included 78 tanks, 113 armored personnel carriers and 130 artillery systems.

The information could not be independently verified. In the daily updated list of Russian losses in Ukraine since the start of the war, the Ukrainian General Staff on Sunday listed 324,830 soldiers killed or wounded.

Difficult data situation
The number of tanks destroyed by the Russian forces so far amounts to 5,513. Ukrainian forces also claim to have shot down 5,900 drones in response to Russian airstrikes. This information also cannot be verified.

Neither Kiev nor Moscow publish the actual losses of their armed forces. Last summer, American experts estimated Russian losses at about 120,000 dead and 180,000 wounded; on the Ukrainian side, 70,000 soldiers are said to have been killed and about 120,000 injured.

Sudden onset of winter in Ukraine
Large parts of the Ukrainian Black Sea coast were affected and paralyzed by the sudden onset of winter. Snowstorms brought road traffic around the port city of Odessa to a standstill, Ukrainian media reported. Several country roads were closed to traffic. In Odessa, school classes were converted to video conferences on Monday. Snow and sleet also caused problems in the interior of Ukraine. Authorities urged citizens to avoid unnecessary car journeys.

Snowstorm in Crimea
Schools and authorities in many places on the Crimean peninsula, which Russia has occupied in violation of international law, were also declared closed on Monday. Initially, Monday was declared a day off in the port city of Sevastopol, but shortly afterwards this decision was extended to the entire Crimea. In Evpatoria, the snowstorm caused a massive power outage that left almost 40,000 people in unheated darkness, the Russian agency Tass reported. Several retirement homes were evacuated.
