Man swept into the sea – Ukraine: Megastorm causes deaths and injuries

Date:

Ukraine is currently being hit by huge storms; five people did not survive the heavy snowstorm. Hundreds of thousands have been cut off from electricity.

A violent storm hit the Black Sea regions of Ukraine and Russia, accompanied by heavy rain and snow. The wind has toppled trees and downed power lines.

At least five people have been killed in the southern Ukrainian region of Odessa, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to official information, more than 1,500 places in central and southern Ukraine are without power after the heavy snowstorm. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko spoke of drifts two meters deep. According to authorities, 15,000 homes in the Kiev region were still without power on Monday evening.

Zelenskyj praised the emergency services
The number of injured was given as 19. Schools and highways were closed. In his evening speech on Monday, Zelenskyj thanked the hundreds of helpers currently on duty.

A heavy snowstorm hit the entire Black Sea coast of Ukraine on Sunday, causing significant problems in many places. In addition to the power supply in some areas, road traffic also collapsed.

Difficult weather conditions also in Crimea
The snowstorm also paralyzed traffic and public life on the Crimean Peninsula, which was occupied and annexed by Russia in violation of international law. According to media reports, several people were injured in Crimea and a 50-year-old man was swept into the sea by waves and drowned. There were also power outages, flooding and road closures due to fallen trees.

In the winter of the previous year, the Russian military tried to put pressure on the Ukrainian population with air strikes on the country’s energy infrastructure. Official Kiev expects a similar scenario this winter.

Russia suffered heavy losses in the war
However, Ukrainian authorities reported heavy losses inflicted by the army on the Russian invaders over the past week. “6,260 occupiers and 672 units of weapons and military technology were destroyed,” the UNIAN agency quoted Deputy Defense Minister Olexandr Pavlyuk as saying on Sunday. The weapons systems destroyed included 78 tanks, 113 armored personnel carriers and 130 artillery systems.

The information could not be independently verified. In the daily updated list of Russian losses in Ukraine since the start of the war, the Ukrainian General Staff on Sunday listed 324,830 soldiers killed or wounded. The number of tanks destroyed by the Russian forces so far amounts to 5,513. Ukrainian forces also claim to have shot down 5,900 drones in response to Russian airstrikes. This information also cannot be verified.

Neither Kiev nor Moscow publish the actual losses of their armed forces. Last summer, American experts estimated Russian losses at about 120,000 dead and 180,000 wounded; on the Ukrainian side, 70,000 soldiers are said to have been killed and about 120,000 injured.
