Dar al Janub or “Association for Anti-Racist and Peace Policy Initiatives” is a Viennese association that spreads Hamas propaganda online and has even maintained contact with members of several terrorist organizations in the past. It is also said that money has flowed or is flowing. This is now evident from a report by the Documentation Center for Political Islam.
Since Hamas’ attack on Israel, demonstrations have taken place in many places to show solidarity with the victims in Gaza. Hamas’s actions are often downplayed.
In Austria, the group Dar al Janub is part of the protest movement. This allows Hamas propaganda to be spread online; members have maintained contacts with various terrorist groups in the past, as shown in a report by the Documentation Center for Political Islam.
Alliances with terrorist organizations
The “Association for Anti-Racist and Peace Policy Initiatives” – better known as Dar al Janub (Arabic for “House of the South”) – supports development aid projects, organizes Islamic banquets, anti-racist interventions and strives to name colonial crimes – apparently. However, behind the facade of a legitimate interest group lies a “dichotomous worldview that attributes all the good to the ‘global South’ and all the negative to the ‘West’,” says the report published on Sunday.
The association, which has now existed for twenty years, enters into alliances with “left-wing extremist and anti-Semitic groups” and supports various organizations that are classified as terrorist. “Social involvement and freedom of expression are abused by the association’s activists to devalue other people and create a breeding ground for radicalization,” warns Lisa Fellhofer, director of the documentation center.
Photo with Hamas leader
In 2021, Dar al Janub’s spokesperson posted a photo on Facebook in the mid-2000s with Ismail Haniyya, one of Hamas’s central leaders, with the words: “You have to travel far to meet politicians who keep their word.” For years, Hamas representatives in Austria are said to have been invited to events in Dar al Janub, and representatives of the Viennese association are said to have met Osama Hamdan in Lebanon.
“Settlers return to Europe and the US”
But the association has also shown sympathy for various Islamist groups in the recent past and shared photos describing fallen Islamist fighters as martyrs. On October 9 – two days after Hamas’s attack on Israel, which resulted in kidnappings and rapes of Israel’s civilian population – the association described Hamas and its allies as Palestinian resistance forces that had initiated a liberation process. In addition, Israel is accused of carrying out pogroms in the West Bank and demands that “settlers be returned to Europe and the US.”
Also financial support
The DPI report shows that Dar al Janub has presented itself in the past as a partner in development aid and has received $100,000 from the OPEC Fund for International Development. According to its own statements, the association also supported controversial organizations, such as the Palestinian Humanitarian Association (PHV). According to Israel’s domestic intelligence service, the PHV is part of a Hamas financing network.
