Date:

CCOO, UGT and CSIF, which have the majority in the works council, have approved the plan proposed by management. The staff reduction will take place through childcare contracts, geographical mobility measures and stimulated leave.

The works council of Michelin Vitoria-Gasteiz on Tuesday approved the multinational’s proposed plan for the ‘surplus’ of 150 employees that the company says is present at the factory.

The decision of the works council has been ratified by DC. OO., UGT and CSIF, which have a union majority, and voted against ELA, LAB, ESK and CGT. For its part, the CCM has abstained.

The staff reduction will take place via emergency aid contracts, geographical mobility measures and incentivized leave. On the one hand, the childcare contract will be advanced to those born in 1962, while retaining 20% of the working day until effective retirement. On the other hand, the company will prioritize functional mobility within the Vitoria-Gasteiz factory and voluntary geographical mobility within the company’s factories in Spain and Portugal, which have the opportunity to hire more staff. Finally, employees who want to leave voluntarily receive compensation for 33 days worked per year with a maximum of 18 monthly costs or 75,000 euros.

During Tuesday’s meeting, it was agreed to extend the deadline to January 15 for employees to comply with the proposed measures.

In addition, the company will now communicate to 650 employees the changes in working conditions, as in some cases it will move from working with five teams (three active and two absent) to four or three.

On the other hand, the company’s management has reaffirmed its promise not to fire any employee for productive reasons in the next six months.

After the meeting, UGT issued a statement emphasizing that “in the face of confrontation and threats, dialogue and negotiation is the solution,” a solution that means “there will be no traumatic exits” from the factory.

The Deputy General of Álava, Ramiro Gonzálezhas considered the agreement between the management of the Michelin factory in Vitoria and the workers’ committee on encouraging sick leave as “good” and “important” news “to resolve the situation of 150 employees and consolidate a relationship of trust and fluid dialogue between the committee and management”.
