Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to visit both the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia next Wednesday. “All this takes place virtually within 24 hours,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday, according to the Interfax news agency. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, in turn, is expected to visit Russia on Thursday.
Putin’s working visits to Saudi Arabia and the Emirates are mainly about bilateral relations, but of course further coordination on the oil markets is also discussed, Peskov explained when asked. However, he did not confirm rumors about a possible appearance by the Russian ruler at the UN climate summit in Dubai.
Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, had already announced the work trips to Saudi Arabia and the Emirates on Monday, but did not provide a specific day or further details.
Oil countries want to drive up prices
Recently, the oil exporting country organization OPEC+, of which Russia is a member, decided to further reduce oil production to keep prices high. Despite the decision, oil prices continued to fall. When asked about this, Peskov explained that the effect of such decisions sometimes comes with a delay. In any case, coordination of measures to stabilize the market will be maintained, he said.
The semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim reported on Tuesday that President Raisi would be accompanied by a political and economic delegation on his trip to Russia. Peskov said a meeting between Raisi and Putin was planned.
Kremlin and mullahs are closely linked
Since the start of Russia’s comprehensive war of aggression against Ukraine from the end of February 2022, Russia and Iran have intensified their political and economic relations, as well as those in the security field. Russia uses Iranian Shahed drones in the war in Ukraine.
Putin is accused of war crimes in connection with the kidnapping of hundreds of children from Ukraine. The government in Moscow rejects this. They are not members of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which issued an international arrest warrant for Putin in March.
