By his own words, former US President Donald Trump will not become a dictator if re-elected – except on the first day of his term. His opponent has now admitted that without Trump he would probably not run for office. Meanwhile, an old acquaintance speculates about joining the race for the Oval Office.
“No. No. ‘Other than the first day,'” Trump said Tuesday at a Fox News event in Davenport when asked if he would become a “dictator” if he won the November election.
He would use his presidential powers on “day one” to close the southern border with Mexico and expand oil drilling. Fox host Sean Hannity then visibly tried to put Trump’s comments into perspective.
The passage described for review:
During the televised event, Trump had to be asked twice to deny that he would abuse his power to avenge political opponents if he returned to the White House.
Trump is seeking a second term as US president and could again compete with incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden. He has repeatedly threatened his political opponents with “retaliation” if he returns to power.
Biden is running to prevent Trump
Immediately after the event, Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said: “Donald Trump has told us exactly what he will do if re-elected, and tonight he said he will be a dictator on day one. Americans should believe him.”
“If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I would be running,” Biden said Tuesday at a fundraiser for his 2024 campaign near Boston. “We can’t let him win.”
Biden has repeatedly warned that Trump is a threat to democracy and that a second Trump term could usher in an unprecedented and dangerous era of American autocracy.
Lawsuits and a new competitor
Trump, 77, faces several federal and state charges related to the storming of the Capitol, the outcome of the 2020 presidential election and the finances of his companies. Trump has consistently denied all allegations.
Warnings are also coming from the Republican side: Former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney, who has openly criticized Trump and led the investigation into the attack on the Capitol, said this week that a Trump dictatorship was a “very real threat” if he were to re-elect to win.
The daughter of former US Vice President Dick Cheney is considering entering the presidential race as an independent candidate.
