And it is moving: the European Commission is presenting a new directive for animal transport. With stricter rules and time limits.
It already seemed that the EU would withdraw the entire animal protection package announced for this year. Although some important aspects remain untouched, the Commission is now presenting a new regulation for the transport of animals.
Accordingly, cattle, sheep, goats, horses and pigs en route to the slaughterhouse may travel for a maximum of nine hours. Animals transported for other reasons may spend a maximum of 21 hours in the vehicle – with a one-hour break after ten o’clock. Stricter requirements must apply to young animals, even at low temperatures. If in doubt, a veterinarian decides whether the livestock is suitable for transport, and the Commission aims to ensure EU standards for animal transport to third countries through certification and training of staff.
Sanctions ‘proportionate and dissuasive’
Brussels wants to place the penalties for violations in the hands of the Member States. All it says is that the fine must be “effective, proportionate and dissuasive”.
The European Commission also wants to come up with a bill to curb the illegal trade in pets.
