One dead young Upper Austrian and 46 injured – that is the sad outcome of the September bus accident in Carinthia, in which student Jana (19) from Weibern was killed. Video recordings from the driver’s cabin now show that the driver apparently did not tell the police the truth.
“The driver’s statement does not correspond to the recordings of the video camera from the driver’s cabin” – this is the short summary of the official verdict. Means: The driver told an untruth.
Lost control
As a reminder, after the fatal accident last September on Friesacher Straße in Carinthia, the Ukrainian claimed in his interview that he grabbed a water bottle and lost control of the Flix double-decker bus.
Dashcam has exposed the lie
But the horrific dashcam footage speaks a different language, albeit an even more incomprehensible one: the driver was sitting behind the wheel completely normally, without making any unnatural movements, when the bus crashed into the guardrail in Carinthia and ended up in the ditch . . 19-year-old Jana from Weibern, who was on her way to visit her holiday parents in Italy, was killed and 46 other passengers were injured, some seriously.
The tachograph has not been tampered with
Microsleep has been ruled out as a cause, the “Krone” learned – especially because the tachographs were not manipulated and the rest times were therefore observed. It was simply a driving error that led to the tragedy. No one actually understands why the driver (27) told the water bottle fairy tale during the interrogation. Perhaps he thought it would be “easier” for him from a legal perspective. But either way, the investigation is about negligent homicide. If convicted, you could face up to one year in prison.
Sad Christmas in women
For women, however, there will be a very sad Christmas this year. Because 19-year-old Jana’s life was taken far too early in the terrible accident. The music student was on her way to Italy with her boyfriend to meet her parents, who were in Venice.
The victim’s uncle also died this year
It was not the only fateful event that affected family and friends this year: Jana’s uncle, the musician and lawyer Franz R., who celebrated his 50th birthday in May, died of cancer on August 3. In 1987, he and his two brothers were part of the founding team of one of the most famous bands from Upper Austria.
