Under strict police protection, an attempted murder began in Stuttgart on Thursday against a 23-year-old man who wanted to throw a hand grenade at a group of mourners during a funeral. Only a branch from which the grenade was deflected prevented a major catastrophe with dozens of deaths.
The explosion on June 9 at the cemetery in Altbach (Baden-Württemberg) injured 15 people, some seriously. Early in the trial, the 23-year-old pleaded guilty and had his lawyer apologize to everyone who was injured.
“He consciously took advantage of the fact that the mourners were thinking about the deceased,” the prosecutor said about the Iranian’s treacherous attack plan.
Feud between rival gangs
The investigators suspect that a war between two rival gangs is the reason for the crime. The suspect is a member of a Kurdish group. The majority of the members would be young men.
In addition to the attack, other bloody acts related to the feud have taken place in recent months. The hand grenade launcher itself was attacked and attacked. There was also a shooting and a suspicious fire in a restaurant, Zeit reports.
