That could have been fatal! A pensioner from Innviertel forgot to extinguish a lit candle on the Advent wreath. The woman went to bed, but fortunately noticed the burning smell later. She was just able to escape from the apartment and the fire brigade extinguished the flames.
The 86-year-old woman wanted to enjoy Advent in a contemplative way on Saturday evening in Munderfing. She lit a candle on the Advent wreath in the kitchen of her apartment. Around 8:30 PM she decided to go to sleep. She went to bed, but forgot to blow out the candle.
Noticed the smell of burning
Fortunately, the pensioner had not yet fallen into a deep sleep, but was only dozing a bit.
Around 9:30 p.m. she suddenly noticed a burning smell. Frightened by this, she ran into the kitchen and saw that the Advent wreath was already on fire.
Granddaughter raised the alarm
The 86-year-old responded with presence of mind, immediately fled the apartment and informed her granddaughter. The 32-year-old alerted the fire brigade. Emergency services from Munderfing and Achenlohe drove to the scene of the fire with 24 emergency workers and three vehicles.
By joining forces, they managed to control and extinguish the fire in the kitchen. The exact extent of the damage is still unclear, but it will probably be significant. No one was injured in the fire.
