February marks the tenth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Crimea and the second anniversary of the major attack on all of Ukraine by Putin’s forces. Drones are playing an important role like no other conflict before. Kiev defended itself more successfully than the attackers expected. The drone NGO Aerorozvidka is partly responsible for this.
Aerorozvidka means ‘aerial reconnaissance’ and has been committed to modernizing the military since fighting in Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions began almost a decade ago. As a link between the drone industry and the military, volunteers from civil society and the military – business people, engineers, computer scientists, soldiers, artists – have actively promoted the use of drones. We spoke with the head of the group, Yaroslav Honchar, about the technological catch-up of the Ukrainians, the effect of Western sanctions on Russian drone production and the growing war fatigue in Europe.
