Through a daring scam, two young perpetrators have made a large sum of money from a doctor’s office in Vienna. While one of the two took the assistant out of the room under some pretext, the second searched the private rooms of the practice. The thieves made off with 500 euros in cash. What they probably didn’t know was that there was a surveillance camera in the practice…
“It was an organized crime,” says the doctor involved, shocked by the almost professional actions of the two perpetrators. On Wednesday afternoon, a young man entered the dental practice in Mariahilf and said in broken English that he urgently needed treatment. The assistant then left the reception to ask the doctor if he could spontaneously treat the alleged acute patient.
What the assistant couldn’t know was that the young man probably didn’t have a toothache at all. It was probably more of a blatant distraction tactic. As the surveillance camera images show, a man wearing white sneakers entered the practice at the same time and stood in the front room, which was not visible from the reception.
While his alleged accomplice sat in the waiting room fiddling with his mobile phone, the other sneaked into the private rooms of the practice unnoticed. There he found the assistant’s bag. “She had 500 euros in cash for Christmas shopping and the perpetrators let them go,” the doctor said.
When the assistant returned to the reception, both men had already disappeared. “It took them less than two minutes to carry out their coup,” said the doctor, who fears his practice could already have been spied on.
“Not even 20 years old”
The police have started an investigation and have secured the surveillance camera images. “The investigation is ongoing,” a police spokesperson told krone.at. The doctor involved now hopes that the images can be used to identify the perpetrators: “One of them was not yet twenty years old. If he gets caught, his mother should give him a hard time….”
