All bird lovers are asked to help until December 24: as part of the winter bird count by Fressnapf and the Nature Conservation Association, feathered guests are being counted throughout Austria. Everyone who participates makes an important contribution to the research. In addition, great prizes will be raffled among all participants!
In principle, you should also spend time protecting nature and animals in the run-up to Christmas. The Nature Conservation Association and Fressnapf launched a major participatory campaign in December this year to gain a clearer picture of the status of bird populations in the settlement area. And everyone can be part of this project!
From home or during a walk
Until December 24, the activity ‘Wild birds at the feeding ground’ offers a good opportunity to get acquainted with the diversity of the local bird world and perhaps discover something new. Whether in the garden, on the balcony, from the window or in the park – every bird observation at the bird feeder counts.
During a walk with Maggie Entenfellner from the animal corner “Krone”, zoologist Janette Siebert from the Nature Conservation Association tells interesting things about our feathered guests and how everyone can do something to protect them (full interview in the video).
“Kron”: Which birds can you see in Austria in winter?
Janette Siebert: Blackbirds, sparrows, the ever-popular great tit, blue tit or robin. Many finch birds, such as the chaffinch. There are many species to discover.
Is the bird population declining, so that it is necessary to register how many birds there are actually there?
Unfortunately, yes! Stocks have been declining for years. A number of species are at risk as a result of global warming, increasing soil sealing and agricultural intensification. But not only birds, insects are also affected.
What can everyone do to protect the birds, besides participating in the current count, observing them, taking photos and sending them to the app?
If you have your own garden or balcony, use native plants if possible or at least from Europe. They are important food sources for birds and insects.
The initiative is supported by the Fressnapf company. Bird feeders, feeding columns, feeding bowl vouchers and bird identification posters will be raffled among all participants who report their bird sightings between December 1 and 24, 2023.
