The Israeli army’s campaign against Hamas is increasingly making negative headlines. Just days after soldiers accidentally shot three Israeli hostages, two women were killed by a sniper outside a Catholic church in Gaza City.
A woman and her daughter who had sought shelter in the church were murdered “in cold blood,” the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which belongs to the Catholic Church, said on Saturday.
Families sought refuge from the fighting
The sniper shot them on the church grounds, “where there are no war participants” and most Christian families took refuge from the fighting. The woman died when she tried to get the other to safety. The Israeli army did not issue any warning in advance. Seven other people were injured by the fire.
Tanks shelled monastery
In addition to the attack, several shells from Israeli tanks also hit a monastery on the church grounds where more than fifty people with disabilities lived. The building is no longer habitable due to the damage caused by an explosion and fire. People have been displaced, including some who require ventilators to survive.
When asked, the Israeli military initially did not comment on the allegations, which could not be independently verified.
British MP describes situation in church
A British MP told the BBC news channel that her relatives took shelter in the church along with hundreds of other citizens. Her family has no access to food or water and is “a few days away from death,” Layla Moran said. After contacting her family, she described the situation on social media as “terrible.” Two church employees were shot and their bodies lay in front of the church, Moran wrote on X.
Before the war started, approximately 2.2 million people lived in the Gaza Strip. The population consists almost exclusively of Muslims. According to church figures, less than one percent of the population is Christian.
