Elections in Serbia – SNS nationalists likely to win absolute majority

Date:

The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which has been in power since 2012, is celebrating a clear victory in the parliamentary elections. As the NGO CESID, known for its precise forecasts, announced on Sunday evening, the SNS probably won an absolute majority.

In figures this means: After counting 65.1 percent of the votes, the nationalist SNS has 46.6 percent, which amounts to 129 seats. In second place is the pro-Western opposition coalition ‘Serbia against violence’ with 23 percent of the votes.

According to CESID, this would amount to 63 mandates. The Socialists follow with 6.9 percent of the votes or 19 seats. Two smaller nationalist parties also reached parliament with 4.9 and 4.8 percent respectively, which will give them 13 mandates each. Voter turnout in the elections is said to be around 60 percent.

Reports of irregularities
Election observers and the media, reporting numerous irregularities during the elections, described incumbent Prime Minister Ana Brnabić as a “liar” who aimed to cause “panic and chaos.”

During the day, both critical government media and observers pointed out that voters from the Bosnian Republika Srpska were systematically brought to Belgrade during the day to vote in the Serbian capital. According to investigations, the SNS was threatened with a neck-and-neck race here.

For Brnabić, such claims were “stupidity of incredible proportions.” In this context, Rasa Nedeljkov, head of the NGO CRTA, spoke of the “undemocratic nature of the elections”.

Hauptsache Vučić
Reports from TV channel N1 about the mood domestically in the last week of the primaries also showed that many voters simply ‘wanted to vote’ for incumbent President Aleksandar Vučić. Many people probably don’t know that Serbia’s head of state is not a candidate.
