The traditional Christmas market in Innsbruck’s Old Town has enjoyed cult status for half a century – and is also known beyond the borders of Tyrol! Mulled wine and punch have been warming hands and hearts in Innsbruck for 50 years. This is celebrated with golden jubilee cups and Peintner’s mountain Christmas cake.
Christmas markets have long been a tradition in Tyrol. As early as 1657 there was a Sint-Niklaas market on the town square in front of the Golden Roof. At that time, however, the Advent markets only lasted a few days.
The Christmas market as we know it today has existed since 1973. The beginning was clear: 17 stands, of which only one was culinary. Well-known names can still be found among the very first exhibitors – such as bakery Kröll, Palmers, Ortner and Stanger, confectionery Munding and the soap and candle manufacturers of Walde. In the meantime, a lot has changed at the Innsbruck Christmas market.
