So many of our wonderful readers donate to Styrians in need. The fate of a mother in particular gets under your skin. She lost both legs after an infection, but she still looks forward to Christmas with her family.
Many of our readers simply did not have the words to describe the tragedy of the Styrian woman: the mother of two children “just” had a cough, as each of us has had many times before. But suddenly there was blood and on March 27 she fell over. She woke up in the hospital after four weeks (!) of deep sleep. Totally shocked by all the tubes everywhere, the ventilator she was on. And about bandaged stumps instead of her legs, and also about fingers.
Thoughts of family were stronger than the longing for death
The cause was a streptococcal infection. One of such an aggressive form that “doctors told me that almost no one can survive it,” says Monika N. Survival – in her terrible despair, the Styrian woman initially only wanted to be dead. “Just thinking about my family, my children, my husband, gave me the strength to keep going.” Then it meant: interventions, rehabilitation, and she could only go home to her family at the end of October.
Now there are still days when she is dependent on a wheelchair, but now you can clearly see that the 47-year-old has regained the courage to live again. She is already quite mobile on the prostheses and can grasp quite deftly with her hands, missing fingers or parts of her fingers. Of course: there is still a long way to go.
For many things, such as sports with the children, it’s way too far, that will never work. “Of course you struggle with fate and ask yourself: why does something like this happen to me? But these are short phases, so I’m grateful and humbled to have survived. And see how beautiful life is.”
A lot has changed for her: “I don’t take many things so seriously anymore. And feel much more what is important at Christmas and in life in general: family. Love. Taking the time, giving it, being there for each other.”

In any case, she will have to struggle with her fate psychologically for a long time, perhaps forever. Even their little children. Even if they courageously pretend that “everything is normal”, everything is fine, Mom is the same as before – the little one still wrote in her letter to the Christ Child: “Dear Christ Child, please give Mom new legs.” breaks your heart.
