The strong wind again caused many problems in Styria on Saturday. 3,000 households were temporarily without power because trees fell on power lines. Lift activities in many ski areas also had to be stopped. The storm also brought flooding.
In several areas in Upper Styria and northern East Styria, trees fell on power lines overnight, causing serious damage.
“Recovery is in full swing”
“Currently, 3,000 households are affected and 146 transformer stations are out of use. The restoration of supplies is in full swing, emergency teams from the south of the country are on site to provide reinforcement,” Energie Steiermark wrote on Facebook. Efforts are being made to reassure those affected: “Styria’s energy networks currently assume that most of the damage will be repaired during the course of today.”
And the fire brigade continued all day – because there were also floods, especially in the Liezen region: “On Saturday morning, the thaw also put pressure on the plans of the emergency services. The rapid melting of the snow caused flooded roads, sewage treatment plants and about two dozen cellars “, reports Christoph Schlüsselmayer from the Liezen fire command.
The weather remains stormy in the north
However, caution is also required on Christmas Eve, especially in northern Styria, because there can sometimes be stormy westerly winds, especially in the mountains. The situation is not expected to calm down until Christmas Day.
Ski areas are also affected
The ski areas of Styria are also hit by heavy gusts of wind. On Saturdays there are no lifts at Hauser Kaibling due to strong winds, and activities are limited at Planai and Reiteralm. The Planneralmstraße is closed due to avalanche danger.
