An emergency call was made to the Carinthian State Alarm and Warning Center (LAWZ) on Monday around 1:30 p.m. A fire broke out in the Hochfeistritz Church in the Görtschitz Valley.
“The emergency services of seven volunteer fire brigades are currently on site,” the LAWZ confirmed shortly afterwards. The sacristy in the church had caught fire: “We were dealing with a large smoldering fire here,” Erich Kaiser, commander of the St. Walburgen volunteer fire brigade, told the “Krone”.
The wooden stairs in the sacristy burned down
The fire probably started in the sacristy and then quickly spread to a wooden staircase. “Neighbors of the church noticed the clouds of smoke already coming from the sacristy and immediately called the fire brigade,” a police officer explained.
Until the fire brigade arrived, the neighbors tried to control the fire with a fire extinguisher – without success. A total of 125 firefighters from the St. Veit and Völkermarkt districts managed to bring the fire under control. “We are currently extinguishing the fire,” it said in the afternoon. No one was injured and no one was in the church at the time.
The exact cause of the fire is still unclear, as is the extent of the damage. Arson has already been ruled out. An investigation is now underway.
