The transmission tower on Dobratsch was put into use 50 years ago. This allows radio and television to be received in Carinthia. On the day before Christmas, a piece of ice fell from the 167 meter high tower and hit a woman. Two mountaineers helped with the rescue operation!
“On December 23, shortly before noon, a piece of ice came from the ORF transmitter and fell on a woman,” says Gregor Pobegen of the Villach mountain rescue team, describing the operation before Christmas.
The emergency medical helicopter was dispatched first from the control center. However, due to strong winds, the aircraft could not land in the top area. “A crew member was therefore dropped off nearby and alerted the local mountain rescue service to transport the patient overland.”
Fortunately, a member of the Villach mountain rescue service was near the mountain rescue equipment depot on the Zehner summit at the same time, so that further measures could be taken immediately.
Two Carinthians showed moral courage
“Two ski tourers spontaneously offered their help and supported the mountain rescuer with the ground transport of the emergency equipment from the Zehner summit to the summit house,” says operations manager Hannes Grall, who praises the two helpful men. “Thanks to this valuable help, the material could be transported very quickly!”
The two mountain athletes had previously completed a climb themselves, but still helped without hesitation. “One of the two even left his family behind in the shelter on the Zehner summit,” says the mountain rescuer, grateful for this moral courage.
Mountain Rescue thanks you
Shortly before the trio arrived at the transmission tower, the patient was transported to Bad Bleiberg by material cable car. “The team with the assisting skiers had to turn around and they both helped diligently with the subsequent transport of the equipment back,” says Grall. “At this moment we would like to thank Florian Fleischhacker from Goritschach and Andreas Hayszan from Sattendorf for their spontaneous and selfless help!”
Nothing is yet known about the health of the woman who was hit in the arm by the piece of ice.
