Incredible scenes in Steyregg, Upper Austria, Wednesday evening: a group of around 50 young people extensively disrupted a fire brigade operation and harassed female firefighters. The police had to respond to protect the emergency services.
It was around 10.30pm on Wednesday when the fire brigades of Steyregg and Lachstatt were called to a fire alarm at the CoHotel – which serves as accommodation for young asylum seekers.
About 50 young people
As soon as they arrived, emergency services were greeted by a group of approximately fifty male youths. “When we arrived at the operational address, it was clear that a waste container was completely on fire and that the residents of the shelter accommodation were dancing around the source of the fire, preventing the fire brigade from gaining unhindered access to the source of the fire. ”, the fire brigade writes on its homepage.
Women were harassed
Ultimately, the police were called in to calmly extinguish the fire. Ultimately, seven patrols and police dogs were on site to protect the emergency services. The female members of the fire brigade in particular were massively harassed. “We then let them stay with the vehicles and protected them,” Commander Rudolf Breuer told the “Krone”.
Because spectators then even entered the track of the nearby Summerauerbahn, it had to be closed. The operation finally ended around midnight. The fire brigade drove back – ‘under police protection’, as Breuer reports.
Several false alarms in recent days
The fire brigade had to go to the shelter several times in recent days. The so-called push-button alarm was accidentally activated several times and there was no fire.
Mayor announces crisis summit
The operation will not remain without consequences. Mayor Gerhard Hintringer announced on site that a crisis summit would take place in the coming days.
