The federal army will continue to guard critical infrastructure until the end of February

Date:

The surveillance of critical infrastructure by the federal army in Vienna will initially last until the end of February. About 150 soldiers are currently involved in these operations, the federal army announced in a broadcast on New Year’s Day.

Domestically, the army provided 336,700 (2022: 370,640) man-days last year as part of the security police operation ‘Migration’ and guarding critical infrastructure in the federal capital.

Reduction of fears
It said that approximately 22,350 (2022: 60,000) refugees and approximately 70 smugglers (2022: 100) were apprehended in 2023. According to the Ministry of Defense, there are currently almost 900 soldiers in 15 missions abroad. 31 of them are women.

The strongest contingents are in Kosovo (KFOR 304), in Bosnia and Herzegovina (EUFOR 301) and in Lebanon (UNIFIL 226). A special feature was the deployment of crisis support teams to the Middle East, mainly members of the fighter command, to support the evacuation operation of Austrian civilians, the report said.

More than 1000 mine clearance missions
The mine clearance service has recovered and neutralized 50,858 kilograms of war material in 1,042 missions. About 100 kilograms of this was recovered from the Austrian lakes during three diving missions. In September, 16 unexploded USSR bombs from World War II were born and disposed of at a construction site near Enzersdorf-Fischa alone.
