In some Tyrolean towns mystical things happen on the eve of Epiphany. Illustrious characters are on the move. In Alpbach, in the Zillertal and in Angerberg, special rituals have developed that have lasted for generations. Every village has its own traditions.
Bercht or Berchtl – or even Percht or Peaschtl? Regardless of the exact spelling, it is about the characters who bring blessings and health to families for the new year. The impressive appearances have little to do with the Perchten, who parade through the villages at other times and occasions and only go out on Grömmacht evening (the evening before January 6), the last rough night of the Christmas period.
